Electrolysis ~ the art of permanent hair removal
Electrolysis, a technique that has been in use since 1875 and developed by an ophthalmologist to remove painful ingrown eyelashes, is still used (though with significant technological improvements) for the destruction of unwanted hair follicles.
The treatment is delivered through a single, sterile probe / needle that is gently inserted into the hair follicle. The insertion is virtually painless. When the probe reaches the end of the follicle where the hair root meets the dermal papilla (blood source to the hair follicle), a small amount of heat is emitted. This heat dehydrates the bulb and cauterizes the junction between the hair root and the papilla. Without its blood source, the follicle dies.
Electrolysis has been and still is the ONLY FDA approved form of permanent hair removal. No other hair removal devices, including lasers, have been able to achieve this definition. It is considered the ONLY method that can treat not only dark, but also grey, white, blond or red hair.
Electrolysis is different to laser hair removal in that a probe is inserted directly into the hair follicle, to target and destroy, inhibiting new hair production. Unlike laser technology which is reliant on the dark pigments within the hair, electrolysis can treat hair that has very little pigments such as blonde, white and grey hair. Due to its powerful circuits and stable currents, electrolysis is capable of pinpoint precision. This technology is efficient, very comfortable and safe for everyone and every skin.
What will I experience during my treatment?
At Tsedeq™ we use a dual current system which has been proven to be the more comfortable option for our clients. Each hair follicle is treated using a sophisticated treatment technique with flash thermolysis technology, which clients describe as a quick sensation. Some areas are naturally more sensitive than others. No topical anaesthetics, ice packs or pain killers are necessary for this procedure as it is easily tolerable.
How does electrolysis differ from laser hair removal?
Unlike laser, electrolysis is perfect for all skin types, all skin and hair colours, all genders, and all ages.
Red, blonde, white and grey hair cannot be treated with laser as the laser energy can only be absorbed into the hair follicle by the pigment, therefore without pigment in the hair, the laser treatments are ineffective.
For stubborn and lighter hairs, electrolysis is by far the best option. The procedure uses a probe to deliver energy directly to each individual follicle and hair, thereby not relying on the pigment within the hair to deliver the energy.
Which areas can be treated?
All areas of the body can be treated using electrolysis. The hair must be visible to effectively treat it and destroy the active hair follicle. Medical clearance will be required from your doctor or dermatologist to treat hairs that grow from moles.
Popular areas include facial hair, fingers, toes, underarms and bikini.
How many treatments are required?
This depends on several factors; such as whether the hair is hormonal, if it has previously been waxed or plucked, and the area of the body that requires the treatment. Hair grows at different rates all over the body. Hair on the head will grow for a period of up to three years before falling out yet hair on our legs may only last 12 weeks. This means it may take 12 weeks for all the hairs on the legs to show before they can be treated – we are only able to treat the hairs that are visible. Some hairs may require several treatments.
As a general rule, under normal circumstances, you can expect to be hair free in treated areas after 12 -18 months assuming that the suggested treatment program has been followed.
What if I am pregnant / breastfeeding?
It is not recommended for pregnant women to undergo electrolysis treatments during pregnancy or while lactating.
